We arrived in one of the most beautiful spots in the world today. Kotor is a fortified town on Montenegro’s Adriatic coast, in a bay near the limestone cliffs of Mount Lovcen. Characterized by winding streets & squares, its medieval old town has several Romanesque churches, including Kotor Cathedral. The old town is surrounded by a wall that looks much like the Great Wall of China rising 1350 meters from the sea. We enjoyed a 5-hour tour that included a steep stretch of road with 25 hairpin turns, a vista to the sea from the summit that was absolutely spectacular and a visit to a farming region to sample their smoked prosciutto and locally produced cheese & wine. Afterwards we drove to the town where the King & Queen lived at the turn of the century before Montenegro became a democracy, and Debb kept company with the Presidential guard at the President’s house before we drove on to the old town of of Budva which has become a little-known beach hideaway for the rich & famous before returning to the ship in Kotor. What an amazing day!
