The history of Poznań and the history of Poland were much the same thing in the nation’s earliest days. The city was founded in the 9th century and became a commercial centre. The city fell into German hands during WWII and was incorporated into Hitler’s Third Reich. In 1945 the battle for its liberation took a month & did a huge amount of damage. In the post-war era, Poznań was one of the first cities to feel the forceful hand of the communist regime during a massive worker’s strike in 1956. Tonight we walked around the old city and the university. There was live music & large groups of people in the Central square all enjoying their first tastes of summer following the end of the COVID lockdown. We enjoyed a great meal, some good Polish wine and a beautiful warm evening in an outdoor restaurant.
