Scrabster is a wee settlement situated on Thurso Bay only a stone’s throw away from the much larger town, Thurso. An important harbour for the fishing industry, the town of Scrabster is set at the base of a small hill in an area of open, windswept landscapes, rolling farmland, moorlands, and small scattered settlements. The Queen Mother had a summer castle, Castle of Mey, close by (about 12 miles away) and spent a good deal of time here tending her gardens and raising some of the most beautiful roses. Today her castle is the summer residence of the Duke of Rothesay. Apart from that, there’s s.f.a. to see or do here and it’s still freezing cold!! This is the jumping off spot for the Orkney Islands, a 90-minute ferry ride on the NorthLink.
