This is where the fjord meets the mountains, where the Sognefjord ends and Jutunheimen glacier and Breheimen National Park begins. It is also a place which more than 300 people call home. The tranquil village of Skjolden is nestled between Norway’s highest mountain range & two spectacular glaciers. The approach by ship is via the picturesque Lusterfjord, which is emerald green because of the melted water from the glaciers. This is a great place from which to explore wild mountain scenery at the roof of Norway, including alpine tops, glaciers, lakes and numerous waterfalls. The Asafossen waterfall is a short 5 Km hike out of town. Along the way we stumbled upon the cabin of Ludwig Wittgenstein, an Austrian philosopher who was born in Vienna in 1889 and who stayed in this hut in 1936-37 to write his memoirs. Born into one of the wealthiest and most talented Jewish families, he left for studies in Berlin, Manchester & Cambridge becoming acquainted with some of the foremost thinkers at the time. Comparing philosophy to both poetry & architecture, he found asking the right questions more important than offering decisive answers.
