Located on the southwest coast of Norway, Haugesund is a town of 37,000 people and the gateway to Fjord country. From here it’s a short drive up the Akrafjorden to Langfoss, a thrilling waterfall. At 612 metres high, Langfossen waterfall is spellbinding. No wonder CNN has listed this quintessential Norwegian waterfall as one of the 10 most beautiful in the world. From Haugesund you can also reach the most iconic hikes in fjord Norway. The Pulpit Rock (the Preikestolen hike) lies 604 metres above Lysefjord & is one of the most popular tourist destinations in Norway. Debb & I got our 13,000 paces in today hiking to Haraldshaugen, Norway’s national monument. This is a spot named in the great sagas of Snorre Sturlason as the final resting place of Harald Harfagre, the first King of Norway who reigned from 872-930. The national monument was erected in 1872 to commemorate Norway’s millennium as a unified kingdom.

The stone cross at Krosshaug is believed to have been erected in early Christian times to “christianize” heathen graves & indicate Christian gathering places. This cross is 3 metres tall & broke in half in the winter of 1846-47 and was reconstructed in 1869 with the two parts joined by iron rings.
