A day of exploration. After a marvellous breakfast we head to Es Trenc, a beautiful beach and wildlife preserve on the south shore, about an hour from our hotel. It’s hot and dry here. You may have heard that a manure pile caught on fire last week under extreme temperatures that reached 44 degrees Celsius, whiched sparked a bit of a wildfire. So today, we’re driving along some narrow country roads with dry hayfields on both sides and the car in front of us rolls down its windows and starts flicking cigarette ashes out. DANGER! Both the ladies in the back seat and the driver are puffing on their cigarettes and flicking their ashes like there’s no tomorrow. Finally the driver throws his butt out the window. We follow them to the beach where we’re both heading and Debb gets out and asks them where they’re from. Italy they say. Then she goes rogue on them like a Pit Bull terrier on fresh raw meat! “Do you know you you could have started a wildfire with you cigarette ashes,” she asks? “Do you know what you did is against the law and you could be fined,” she continued? Suddenly the Italians don’t speak English! Debb told them she took a photo of them with their cigarettes out the window, including their license plate. True fact. Madre Maria, they took off and reparked their car somewhere out of sight for fear we’d get them fined by the police. Well, Debb may have saved Mallorca from a wildfire today, so, of course, we’re celebrating with local wines tonight!
