So the journey begins and it’s a bit like planes, trains and automobiles on the eve of the holiday season. We jumped in our rental car at sunrise this morning and drove the 110 miles from Palm Springs to LAX in record time. No traffic early on a Saturday! Then a bus to the terminal and a plane to SJO and finally an UBER to the Hacienda Belen, our home for a day. It was a long day of travel but we’re glad to be here. San José is the capital and largest city of Costa Rica. It is located in the centre of the country and sits on a high plain at 3,700 feet. Founded in 1737, San José is a sprawling metropolis and is considered to be among the most cosmopolitan cities in Latin America. It has many wonderful museums, bars, restaurants, shopping centres, colourful markets and a fast-paced nightlife. Serving as a hub to the rest of the country, San José is the perfect place to use as a base camp to tour Costa Rica and that’s exactly our plan. Tomorrow we fly to Puerto Jiménez in the southwest of the country to start our jungle adventure.

Morning coffee from the lobby lounge. Beautiful spot.

Beautiful grounds, beautiful morning
